I just found my old (edc) bag and storage box. Have been going through and re-analyzing my old gear. I had a mix of good quality and junk. An interesting find was my old zippo and fluid. I filled it and strike----a nice flame and great smell. Bics and firesteel seems to rule the firestarting arena but curious if there are any zippo fans out there for everyday use.

I carried a Zippo daily for 20 years when i was smoking but since i quit almost 2 years ago i no longer carry it. I keep it in my gun safe next to a picture of my daughter to remind myself why i stopped smoking.

Good job on stopping smoking. I never smoked but started carrying a zippo when i was 12 because the click was the same noise that the time machine device made in the tv show voyagers, and it was the best way to set off the firecrackers i always carried in my other pocket.

I just got a peanut lighter from CountyComm, was thinking about getting a zippo, but the peanut can attach to a key chain pretty easily. no fuel in it yet, so I can't properly asses just yet

Peanuts are great, the fluid doesn't evaporate like it does in a zippo, they're watertight, AND they fit great in the watch pocket of a pair of jeans. Great EDC

I've seen nothing but good reviews on peanut lighters.

Zippo makes a butane insert for their lighters. No more flints, fuel or stink. I think it's only about $10 for the conversion insert too. I have a Weller butane torch that I got from Grainger for $12. I use it to burn the ends of all my para-cord projects. It even lights up with a red LED while it's burning.

I can't find the post, but I recall someone asking about the reliability and fluid evaporation. I had not touched the peanut in a while and went to use it today. No dice. Fluid's gone. It was not an problem this time, but probably not a good thing to rely on in an emergency.

That's not good! I've always had good luck with refillable butane lighters and of course the cheap bic lighters.

Good to know about the fluid evaporating. Can anyone else confirm this problem?

This happened to mine also. Thought it may have leaked maybe from being loose but it happened after I refilled it also.

Looks like the peanut lighters are better suited for short term fire needs vs long term.

Bics are the way to go. Zippos are great for smoking and immediate use but the fluid evaporates and if they do get wet the wick will not light. I have not used the USB device it seems like it would work as long as the battery would keep a long term charge but I'm sure if it for wet that would be a problem also. I would keep a bic for sure

I found at an REI store a waterproof lighter by UST. this thing is Butane refillable, and shoots out a torch like flame.
I also have in my laptop bag (Really my EDC bag) a small peanut lighter. BTW my laptop bag is a Condor Venture pack.
