Today was a beater watch kind of day.

I still really like it. The picture doens't quite do it justice.

Strangely, after almost 21 years of being 100% content with my Omega (and wearing it for about 20 of them uninterrupted except by sending it in for service), I'm almost curious about getting a couple other watches to rotate through. I probably won't do it because I don't need them, and almost all of the watches I'm really interested in look very similar. The top contenders are the Maratac SR-3 that I just can't stop thinking about, and the Hager Commando and GMT Traveller that I recently discovered.

The GMT seems really interesting. I don't travel enough to need it, but the thought that went into the GMT watches is amazing. It's only one extra hand, not that complicated compared to a lot of mechanical complications, and lets you tell time at a glance in 3 time zones.

"Wait, I thought it was 2?!"

No, it's 3. You get the GMT arm to GMT. The Bezel rotates to indicate local time (without even unscrewing the crown), and you keep the standard hands set on your home time. That's 3.

I do find the bezel design kind of funny, though. Turning the bezel is the easiest way to adjust for time zones. But the one that changes most often is which one you're in. The 2 colors on the traditional bezels were supposed to (vaguely) indicate daylight vs. night hours (that's why they swich at 0600 and 1800). So they'll be telling you the same information that the sky does.

Unless I'm missing something, it makes more sense to keep GMT midnight straight up, home time indicated with the bezel, and reset the hour hand when you change time zones. That way you know at a glance how appropriate it is to call home and when you should try to sleep if you're not adjusting to where you are, and you always tell local time by just looking at it like it's a normal watch. But, that's also more difficult, and I've never heard anyone talk about doing it.

I have also never really liked the Rolex homages. I'm pretty sure that the Submariner and GMT Master weren't the first watches of that style, but as far as I'm concerned they own it. Somehow, and I can't put my finger on why, I like the Hagers better than the others I've seen.

I also still want a De Ville Hour Vision. But, I doubt that's ever going to happen unless the used market for Rolexes picks up and I can get some money out of the date just I inherited from my mom. (Somehow, I just don't place any sentimental value in it)
